Choosing a Dog Kennel for Boarding Your Pit Bull Terrier

1029 At one time or another during ownership of your Pit Bull, you will probably have need of a boarding kennel. Unfortunately, your Pit Bull may not be welcome everywhere you go, so you either have to find someone else to care for him while you are away, or stay home, which is not always an option. It is important that you find a kennel that will care for your Pit Bull and ensure his safety while you are away. You should do some research on boarding kennels in your area, and compile a list of all of the ones you might be interested in. The list should include their addresses and phone numbers to make it easier for you when it comes time to check them out. You should start calling down your list. The following will help you with what information you should learn about the kennel before you place your Pit Bull there. Of course, the number one question you should ask on the phone interview is if they board Pit Bulls. Not all kennels are equipped to board all types of dogs, so it is an important question to ask. You also should ensure that the kennel is staffed twenty four seven, so that if there is an emergency, someone will be there to handle it. The kennel building should be equipped with some type of fire alarm system, either a monitored security system that will automatically signal the fire department, or at the very least have fire and smoke detectors installed. You should also ask if they will contact you in case any emergency situation arises, as you want to be informed of any potential danger or problems with your Pit Bull as soon as possible. The kennel should also have an on call veterinarian available to treat the dogs in the case of a medical emergency. You may want to get that veterinarian's name and do some research to see if he is someone you feel comfortable treating your dog if necessary. You may also check with your own veterinarian to see if he could provide emergency care to your Pit Bull while he is in the kennel, and if so, give the staff all the pertinent contact information for him. During the initial interview, you should also find out if they need to get a copy of your dog's medical records to have in case of emergency. This would be especially important if your Pit Bull has had any previous medical problems. You should also ask routine questions, such as how often your Pit Bull will receive fresh food and water, and whether or not you can provide his food if he is on a special diet regimen. It is also important to find out if your dog will have contact with the other animals, and what kind of exercise he will be allowed to get. If your Pit Bull is to have contact with other animals, you should find out how they handle dogs or animals that have aggression issues, especially if they may be allowed around your Pit Bull. By calling around to different kennels before visiting them, it will you give you a good idea of the attitude of the staff. If they are unwilling to talk to you on the phone, or unwilling to answer your questions, you may want to consider canceling them off your list. Once you have called thru your list, and weeded out the uncooperative kennels, you should visit the remaining kennels so you can inspect the facilities for yourself. One of the most obvious things you should be looking for is whether or not the kennel is kept clean and the condition of the kennels themselves. You should also check out the staff to ensure they seem to have a good relationship with the animals they are boarding. Another good thing to keep in mind is how many animals they have on site at one time compared with the number of staff members. You should check out what kind of play areas they offer as well. It should be enclosed, clean, and have adequate room for your Pit Bull. You want to make sure your dog would be happy staying here, and look for things that you know he would like or not like. You should not make a rash decision when it comes to deciding on a kennel for your Pit Bull. Above all else, you should ensure that it is a safe, clean, caring environment for your Pit Bull in your absence.
